For those of you, like me, remain double-agents, I have been stirring the pot somewhat on an innocent quote (from a good and kind buddy) which is growing into one of those dreadful throwing of insults threads Somewhere Else. I do apologise if I have had a blast at any of your buddies - please tell me if I am a Bad Girl. However, there is one particular person I have personally found to be very rude to others - and to me - whom I have desperately tried NOT to have a go at! I have now failed.

Was it the post on the president quote? If so I just majorly took the very rude and condescending Tenesee.Gal to school! She is SUCH a Hyacinth, no wonder she chose it as her avatar!

Shh. No one's going to get in trouble for posting stuff from over there over here, but...
I am trying to make this a 'bigger' forum, not in terms of the number of members, but in how we act. Are we really better than their slurry of insults and pettiness and mod-abusing-powers-to-ban-people-the-mod-doesn't-like-with-no-regard-for-rules if we sit over here and talk nastily about people there that we don't like? Let's be the bigger people and leave our 'copying' to "So I saw this cool thing posted over there and wanted to share it over here..."

Right you are Tal. Still it is a pity you can't see how I took her to the mat. I quoted Merriam-Webster dictionary!

I bet it was glorious~.
If I were a worse person, I'd crack the site and wreak havoc with it. But I'm a good hacker. 0:)
Speaking of, do you actually know the difference between 'hacker' and 'cracker'? The media sure doesn't, any time crackers are up to no good, it gets blamed on hackers. e_e

I'm sure you've heard some variation of this... Hackers break into government websites! Steal information! Bad things terror and doom!!!!!
Actually that's not right. Those are the actions of 'crackers'--they CRACK into things they're not supposed to and cause damage or steal things.
Hackers, on the other hand, 'hack' solutions that are elegant and simple. Ever heard of 'lifehacks' or seen some variation on "21 Craft Hacks to make your DIY projects easier!"
But because they sound similar and the Lowest Common Denominator in the public can't tell the difference.......pander to the base and accuse hackers of the actions of crackers lest we have to learn a new word.

I'm glad there are two names for this procedure. I can now admit to two baby-hacks for noble purposes. I saw something about a glitch on Facebook software which meant personal info could be sold on. The guy who spotted it and warned FB got a reward. They call the good guys "white hats". The "black hats" sneak off to make use of the glitch.

Actually if we want to get into that definition of it, 'cracker' was originally coined by slave owners and only became a pejorative when slavery was abolished in America. And if anyone's prejudiced, it's the white people that are still, even a hundred years after it was abolished, benefiting from that exploitation, and refusing to acknowledge that or give up the advantages they have in favour of letting everyone have a fair chance. And I think that certainly causes enough frustration that it's pretty understandable that a few words of frustration might slip out.
